Frequently Asked Questions

What is psychoanalytic/psychodynamic psychotherapy?
‘Psychoanalytic therapy is a form of talking therapy that is built around conversations with a listener (the psychoanalyst or therapist) who is trained to listen to what might be occurring within your mind on a deeper level. In this way thoughts and feelings can be aired so that you develop a deeper understanding of yourself, your conflicts, fears and anxieties. Having a better understanding of what lies deeper in your unconscious mind can help reduce suffering, enable emotional growth and lead to a more fulfilling life.’ www.bpc.org

For more information please see the website of the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC) which offers a thorough explanation of how this kind of therapy works and the answers to some other FAQs: https://www.bpc.org.uk/information-support/what-is-psychoanalytic-therapy/

What is the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?
Counselling is usually a short-term experience that enables a focused and directive approach to help you find solutions to particular difficulties, in the ‘here and now’. Psychotherapy works at a deeper level, uncovering the root causes of emotional difficulties, which may stem from past experience or deeply rooted psychological issues.

How long does therapy take?
We offer fixed-term (agreed length of time) or open-ended work, and this is usually
agreed during the assessment/first few sessions.

What is Art Therapy?
The type of art therapy we offer is psychodynamically based and allows you to work with materials in the room. More information can be found here https://baat.org/

Are sessions and my personal information kept confidential?

What can I expect when I start?
After an initial phone call or email, we arrange a first meeting during which we will explore in more depth whether psychotherapy can help you and you will be able to assess the benefits of our working relationship.

Do I have to be referred by my doctor?
It is not necessary to have a referral from your GP or other medical specialist for you to have therapy.

What does psychotherapy cost?
Costs of sessions can be found on the personal page of each therapist or can be provided by emailing us.
